Even unsuited connectors can work on rare occasions. Position is only as important as the number of streets you play. Stack size will frequently determine how few streets you play. Say a guy raises 2X on your big blind from a 29X stack. Oddly, this player type is not that rare anymore. So, he raises your big blind, and you have 6h-3h. You can call with this hand, but he has been in that spot so many times before. Everybody flats from the big blind now.

He will know how to check back some of his high cards and small pairs. It will be difficult to checkraise bluff him. So instead we do a smaller 3-bet. People like to raise and call with off-suited high cards. There are far more combinations of offsuit high cards than there are of suited small and middle cards. Of course, this is an extremely exploitative play that only works versus basic opponents, but if you want to get your feet wet with 3-betting out of position, I suggest you try one of these 3-bets in a local live tournament sometime.

Once you move up, however, people are just going to start jamming on you with many hands preflop. So, you should try a slightly more elaborate bluff. You have a X. You have a kid at the table who is loving showing off how aggressive he is. He is underestimating you due to ageism, sexism, what have you. The board comes all low cards with a flush draw. The thing about all of these boards is they are the type of board someone would fastplay their sets, two pair, and some overpairs on. An aggressive regular opens from UTG and the action folds to us in the small blind. There are so many good hands I can flop: top two, pair plus flush draw, even a wrap on T9x. The final error in this process is a lack of clarity in understanding how pot odds function pre-flop in the small blind.

What is this discount we claim to be receiving? The pre-flop action of the big blind is conditional upon our action and when he calls we shall be in a terrible position post-flop. Yet so many hands in PLO are tempting calls on the basis of reasoning similar to that detailed in the opening paragraph. Should we just fold all of them, can we 3-bet them? For this reason I believe that most regulars play the small blind better against a wide range than against a tight range. As a consequence, it is all too common to create a small blind calling range of pretty hands that consistently leaks money. In most circumstances I encourage everyone to play 3-bet or fold from the small blind irrespective of the width of the opening range.

At this juncture I must make a remark on Game Theory: I am close to certain that such a strategy is not optimal theoretically 3. This fear is ill-founded against a tight range, and arises from confusing difficulty playing our hand with difficulty playing our range.

Fold them. Sure you can 3-bet the good ones, what do you think your opponent is going to do with his Aces? Now take a peek at how well you do against AA when you call pre-flop with KK and get to showdown. Is having to fold pre-flop after 3-betting really costing you that much more? If your plan was to set-mine then I hope your opponents fall into the one category where we make an exception….

In fact, in this situation we can remove some of the weaker AA from our 3-betting range since having the fish cold-flat and force us into a 3-way pot with a face-up naked pair is undesirable. This change in pre-flop strategy obligates you to donk-pot the flop whenever you hit. Your range will of course be transparent to the regular, which can create an interesting dynamic when the fish folds and the PFR continues.

If you want to balance your range here especially if the fish can find folds against leads on monochrome and paired textures just delay your check-raise bluff to the turn. This leak is one that takes some discipline and time to fix.

You can be mediocre with hand reading and flop analysis in position and still make money, but that is not going to happen out of position.

In this case, the clear choice is to 3-bet for value. We either win the pot or get to play a big one in position against a loose player. Our value range is relatively wide here as hands like AJs, JTs and TT are slam dunk value 3-bets from these loose positions. We need to 3-bet a bunch of bluffs to balance this value range. The idea of a squeeze play is meant to take advantage of the great pot odds you are getting when facing a raise and 1 or more calls.

Squeezes aim to accomplish similar goals to standard 3-bets, but larger sizes are required to keep reduce the chances that the pot goes multiway. In general, if you are squeezing against a raise and one call, you will want to raise to about 4 times the original bet. Against a raiser and two callers you will want to squeeze closer to 5 times.

When out of position, add one more bet. These sizing shortcuts are not carved in stone. You will certainly want to change your sizing based on your opponents tendencies and range. But, in general, you would expect this player to raise the button. This situation passes the litmus test. Ask yourself if this player ever would limp the button. If so, then this raise represents uncommon strength for a button raise. So what hands should you 3-bet? I like to 3-bet small pocket pairs. And they are difficult to try to nurse to showdown if you miss a set. They are also okay hands to 5-bet shove with if your opponent might 4-bet bluff you—though that dynamic rarely manifests in a live no-limit game.

I like to 3-bet big-medium and big-little suited hands like K-8 suited and A-3 suited. These hands are good because the big card blocks some of the premium hands your opponent could be holding. Also, if called, they give you a chance to flop a flush draw to bluff with. They also give you a chance to hit an overcard against a medium pair. When you 3-bet preflop and then start checking and calling an ace- or king-high flop, many opponents will worry that you flopped top set.

These doubts cause most players at the level to play these flop textures passively and straightforwardly against a preflop 3-bet. I also 3-bet sometimes with suited connectors, though these hands also work well if you call. Obviously, I also 3-bet premium hands like or better and A-J and K-Q or better against these steal raises.

These hands play well after a call, since they give you a good chance to flop top pair, catch your opponent with a second-best hand, and win a medium-sized pot. Your opponent calls. Now what? First, ask yourself if the call was expected or unexpected.

Do you think your opponent usually call? Or do you think he folds a lot? If you think he folds a lot, then you are up against a strong range. If this sounds weak or passive to you, remember that your opponent will frequently fold to the 3-bet. So the preflop reraise play works successfully as a bluff by itself. The key observation is that players at this level who have pocket pairs like J-J on an A flop will typically be trying to get the pair to showdown and not turning it into a bluff.
