Considers the reception and use of deconstruction in the recent history of graphic design. Considers the place of graphics within the theory of deconstruction in the work of philosopher Jacques Derrida. Argues that deconstruction is not a style but a mode of questioning through and about the technologies, formal devices, social institutions and….
Concurrency meets probability: theory and practice abstract. Treating random phenomena in concurrency theory has a long tradition. Petri nets [18, 10] and process algebras have been extended with probabilities. The same applies to behavioural semantics such as strong and weak bi simulation , and testing pre-orders .
Beautiful connections between. We investigate the implications of penalizing incorrect answers to multiple-choice tests, from the perspective of both test-takers and test-makers. To do so, we use a model that combines a well-known item response theory model with prospect theory Kahneman and Tversky, Prospect theory : An analysis of decision under risk, Econometrica , Our results reveal that when test-takers are fully informed of the scoring rule, the use of any penalty has detrimental effects for both test-takers they are always penalized in excess, particularly those who are risk averse and loss averse and test-makers the bias of the estimated scores, as well as the variance and skewness of their distribution, increase as a function of the severity of the penalty.
This document defines contrasting assumptions about the labor force-- theory X and theory Y--and shows how they apply to the pyramid organizational structure , examines the assumptions of the two theories , and finally, based on a survey and individual interviews, proposes a merger of theories X and Y to produce theory Z.
Organizational structures…. Generalized structural theory of freezing. The first-principles order parameter theory of freezing, proposed in an earlier work, has been successful in yielding quantitative agreement with known freezing parameters for monoatomic liquids forming solids with one atom per unit cell. A generalization of this theory is presented here to include the effects of a basis set of many atoms per unit cell. The basic equations get modified by the 'density structure factors' fsub i which arise from the density variations within the unit cell.
Calculations are presented for the important case of monoatomic liquids freezing into hexagonal close packed solids. It is concluded that all freezing transitions can be described by using structural correlations in the liquid instead of the pair potential; and that the three body correlations are important in deciding the type of solid formed after freezing. Sierra Structural Dynamics Theory Manual. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. We try to be far more complete in those areas.
The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer notes manual, the user's notes and of course the material in the open literature. This page intentionally left blank. Comparison of Attachment theory and Cognitive-Motivational Structure theory. They differ primarily in their proposal of when, during development, one's sense of the self and of the outside world are formed.
I propose that the theories supplement each other after about age seven years--when Attachment theory 's predictions of social function become unreliable, CMS theory comes into play. Probabilistic structure of quantum theory.
The fundamental ideas of quantum theory are presented. It is shown that two approaches to quantum theory : Heisenberg's matrix mechanics and Schroedinger's wave mechanics, can be formulated by means of the theory of operators in Hilbert space. Some remarks on Hilbert spaces, diadic and projection operators are done.
States, probabilities and observables of quantum systems are discussed and time evolution of quantum states is analysed. Some remarks on two-component systems and symmetries are given. Algebraic and structural automata theory.
Automata Theory is part of computability theory which covers problems in computer systems, software, activity of nervous systems neural networks , and processes of live organisms development. The result of over ten years of research, this book presents work in the following areas of Automata Theory : automata morphisms, time-varying automata, automata realizations and relationships between automata and semigroups.
Aimed at those working in discrete mathematics and computer science, parts of the book are suitable for use in graduate courses in computer science, electronics, telecommunications, and control engineering. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basic concepts of algebra and graph theory. Alice and Bob meet Banach the interface of asymptotic geometric analysis and quantum information theory.
The quest to build a quantum computer is arguably one of the major scientific and technological challenges of the twenty-first century, and quantum information theory QIT provides the mathematical framework for that quest. Over the last dozen or so years, it has become clear that quantum information theory is closely linked to geometric functional analysis Banach space theory , operator spaces, high-dimensional probability , a field also known as asymptotic geometric analysis AGA.
In a nutshell, asymptotic geometric analysis investigates quantitative properties of convex sets, or other geometric structures , and their approximate symmetries as the dimension becomes large. This makes it especially relevant to quantum theory , where systems consisting of just a few particles naturally lead to models whose dimension is in the thousands, or even in the billions.
Probability and logical structure of statistical theories. A characterization of statistical theories is given which incorporates both classical and quantum mechanics. It is shown that each statistical theory induces an associated logic and joint probability structure , and simple conditions are given for the structure to be of a classical or quantum type.
This provides an alternative for the quantum logic approach to axiomatic quantum mechanics. The Bell inequalities may be derived for those statistical theories that have a classical structure and satisfy a locality condition weaker than factorizability. The relation of these inequalities to the issue of hidden variable theories for quantum mechanics is discussed and clarified.
Geometric Hamiltonian structures and perturbation theory. We have been engaged in a program of investigating the Hamiltonian structure of the various perturbation theories used in practice. We describe the geometry of a Hamiltonian structure for non-singular perturbation theory applied to Hamiltonian systems on symplectic manifolds and the connection with singular perturbation techniques based on the method of averaging.
Artificial grammar learning meets formal language theory : an overview. Formal language theory FLT , part of the broader mathematical theory of computation, provides a systematic terminology and set of conventions for describing rules and the structures they generate, along with a rich body of discoveries and theorems concerning generative rule systems.
Despite its name, FLT is not limited to human language, but is equally applicable to computer programs, music, visual patterns, animal vocalizations, RNA structure and even dance. We offer a brief, non-technical introduction to FLT and then a more detailed analysis of empirical research based on this theory.
We suggest that progress has been hampered by a pervasive conflation of distinct issues, including hierarchy, dependency, complexity and recursion. We offer clarifications of several relevant hypotheses and the experimental designs necessary to test them. We finally review the recent brain imaging literature, using formal languages, identifying areas of convergence and outstanding debates.
We conclude that FLT has much to offer scientists who are interested in rigorous empirical investigations of human cognition from a neuroscientific and comparative perspective. The ontology of quantum field theory : Structural realism vindicated? In this paper I elicit a prediction from structural realism and compare it, not to a historical case, but to a contemporary scientific theory.
If structural realism is correct, then we should expect physics to develop theories that fail to provide an ontology of the sort sought by traditional realists. If structure alone is responsible for instrumental success, we should expect surplus ontology to be eliminated. Quantum field theory QFT provides the framework for some of the best confirmed theories in science, but debates over its ontology are vexed.
Rather than taking a stand on these matters, the structural realist can embrace QFT as an example of just the kind of theory SR should lead us to expect. Yet, it is not clear that QFT meets the structuralist's positive expectation by providing a structure for the world. In particular, the problem of unitarily inequivalent representations threatens to undermine the possibility of QFT providing a unique structure for the world. In response to this problem, I suggest that the structuralist should endorse pluralism about structure.

Smooth Homogeneous Structures in Operator Theory builds the background needed to understand this circle of ideas and reports on recent developments in this fruitful field of research.
Requiring only a moderate familiarity with functional analysis and general topology, the author begins with an introduction to infinite dimensional Lie theory with emphasis on the relationship between Lie groups and Lie algebras. A detailed examination of smooth homogeneous spaces follows. This study is illustrated by familiar examples from operator theory and develops methods that allow endowing such spaces with structures of complex manifolds.
It examines certain symmetry properties of abstract reproducing kernels and arrives at a very general version of the construction of restricted Grassmann manifolds from the theory of loo Probabilistic Structural Analysis Theory Development. The objective of the Probabilistic Structural Analysis Methods PSAM project is to develop analysis techniques and computer programs for predicting the probabilistic response of critical structural components for current and future space propulsion systems.
This technology will play a central role in establishing system performance and durability. The first year's technical activity is concentrating on probabilistic finite element formulation strategy and code development. Work is also in progress to survey critical materials and space shuttle mian engine components.
The final probabilistic code will have, in the general case, the capability of performing nonlinear dynamic of stochastic structures. It is the goal of the approximate methods effort to increase problem solving efficiency relative to finite element methods by using energy methods to generate trial solutions which satisfy the structural boundary conditions. These approximate methods will be less computer intensive relative to the finite element approach.
Current Capability of Atomic Structure Theory. Current capability of atomic structure theory is reviewed, and advantages, disadvantages and major features of popular atomic structure codes described. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental data on transition energies and lifetimes of excited levels are presented to illustrate the current capability of atomic structure codes.
Using structuration theory in action research. Structuration theory , Giddens' meta theory of social practice, has been used for theorizing the IS field and for analyzing empirical case studies, but has been little used in any practical or action research context.
In the action research project reported here, which concerns the development On industrial application of structural reliability theory. In this paper it is shown that modern structural reliability theory is being successfully applied to a number of different industries. This review of papers is in no way complete.
In the literature there is a large number of similar applications and also application not touched on in this presentation. There has been some concern among scientists from this area that structural reliability theory is not being used by industry.
It is probably correct that structural reliability theory is not being used by industry as much as it should be used. However, the work by the ESReDA Working Group clearly shows the vary wide application of structural reliability theory by many different industries. One must also have in mind that industry often is reluctant to publish data related to safety and reliability. General topology meets model theory , on p and t. Cantor proved in [Cantor G J Reine Angew Math ] that the continuum is uncountable, and Hilbert's first problem asks whether it is the smallest uncountable cardinal. A program arose to study cardinal invariants of the continuum, which measure the size of the continuum in various ways.
Much work both before and since has been done on inequalities between these cardinal invariants, but some basic questions have remained open despite Cohen's introduction of forcing. In this paper we explain how our work on the structure of Keisler's order, a large-scale classification problem in model theory , led to the solution of this problem in ZFC as well as of an a priori unrelated open question in model theory. Beam structures classical and advanced theories.
Beam theories are exploited worldwide to analyze civil, mechanical, automotive, and aerospace structures. Many beam approaches have been proposed during the last centuries by eminent scientists such as Euler, Bernoulli, Navier, Timoshenko, Vlasov, etc. Most of these models are problem dependent: they provide reliable results for a given problem, for instance a given section and cannot be applied to a different one.
Beam Structures : Classical and Advanced Theories proposes a new original unified approach to beam theory that includes practically all classical and advanced models for be. Austerity and geometric structure of field theories.
The relation between the austerity idea and the geometric structure of the three basic field theories - electrodynamics, Yang-Mills theory , and general relativity - is studied. One of the most significant manifestations of the austerity idea in field theories is thought to be expressed by the boundary of a boundary principle BBP. There are some difficulties in this line of thought due to the apparent lack of universality in application of the BBP to the three basic modern field theories above.
This dissertation: a analyzes the difficulties by means of algebraic topology, integration theory , and modern differential geometry based on the concepts of principal bundles and Ehresmann connections: b extends the BBP to the unified Kaluza-Klein theory ; c reformulates the inhomogeneous field equations and the BBP in terms of E.
Cartan moment of rotation, in the way universal for the three theories and compatible with the original austerity idea; and d underlines the important role of the soldering structure on spacetime, and indicates that the future development of the austerity idea would involve the generalized theories.

In our world of seemingly unlimited computing, numerous analytical approaches to the estimation of stress, strain, and displacement, including analytical, numerical, physical, and analog techniques, have greatly advanced the practice of engineering. Combining theory and experimentation, computer simulation has emerged as a third path for engineering design and performance evaluation.
As a result, structural engineers working in the practical world of engineering must apply, and ideally, thrive, on these idealizations of science-based theories. It deals with a beautiful method, developed in the mid-nineties by Bazhanov, Lukyanov and Zamolodchikov and, as such, called BLZ. This method can be interpreted as a field theory version of the quantum inverse scattering, also known as the algebraic Bethe ansatz.
Starting with the case of conformal field theories CFTs we show how to build the field theory analogues of commuting transfer T matrices and Baxter Q -operators of integrable lattice models. These objects contain the complete information of the integrable structure of the theory , viz. This same method can be easily extended to the description of integrable structures of certain particular massive deformations of CFTs; these, in turn, can be described as quantum group reductions of the quantum sine-Gordon model and it is an easy step to include this last theory in the framework of BLZ approach.
Finally we show an interesting and surprising connection of the BLZ structures with classical objects emerging from the study of classical integrable models via the inverse scattering transform method. Thermodynamics and the structure of quantum theory. Despite its enormous empirical success, the formalism of quantum theory still raises fundamental questions: why is nature described in terms of complex Hilbert spaces, and what modifications of it could we reasonably expect to find in some regimes of physics?
Here we address these questions by studying how compatibility with thermodynamics constrains the structure of quantum theory. We employ two postulates that any probabilistic theory with reasonable thermodynamic behaviour should arguably satisfy. In the framework of generalised probabilistic theories , we show that these postulates already imply important aspects of quantum theory , like self-duality and analogues of projective measurements, subspaces and eigenvalues.
However, they may still admit a class of theories beyond quantum mechanics. Using a thought experiment by von Neumann, we show that these theories admit a consistent thermodynamic notion of entropy, and prove that the second law holds for projective measurements and mixing procedures. Demographic Structural Theory : 25 Years On. Full Text Available I am grateful to Cliodynamics for this special issue revisiting the ideas put forth in Revolution and Rebellion in the Early Modern World Goldstone , a quarter century ago.
The two things that one could hope for in advancing any theory are that it proves capable of being advanced and enriched by other scholars, and that it proves capable of being applied in new ways and to new phenomena that were not anticipated. This issue gives examples of both, and shows how scholars are even now only beginning to tap the possibilities of Demographic Structural Theory DST in explaining politics, history, and long-term economic trends.
In this essay, I will tell the story of how demographic structural theory was conceived, relate its early reception among scholars, and comment on the important contributions by other scholars to this special issue. The concepts of general relativity and of quasi-inertial coordinate systems are extended beyond their traditional scope. Not only the metric, but also the coordinate system, if quantized, undergoes quantum fluctuations.

Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research Purpose: To determine the exact structure and antimicrobial activity of 2- 3- 4 phenylpiperazinyl Discrete structures in F- theory compactifications.
In this thesis we study global properties of F- theory compactifications on elliptically and genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau varieties. This is motivated by phenomenological considerations as well as by the need for a deeper understanding of the set of consistent F- theory vacua. The global geometric features arise from discrete and arithmetic structures in the torus fiber and can be studied in detail for fibrations over generic bases.
In the case of elliptic fibrations we study the role of the torsion subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group of sections in four dimensional compactifications. We show how the existence of a torsional section restricts the admissible matter representations in the theory.
This is shown to be equivalent to inducing a non-trivial fundamental group of the gauge group. Compactifying F- theory on genus-one fibrations with multisections gives rise to discrete selection rules. In field theory the discrete symmetry is a broken U 1 symmetry. In the geometry the higgsing corresponds to a conifold transition. We explain in detail the origin of the discrete symmetry from two different M- theory phases and put the result into the context of torsion homology.
Finally we systematically construct consistent gauge fluxes on genus-one fibrations and show that these induce an anomaly free chiral spectrum. CRBR reactor structures design. BRC meeting presentation. Some of the more important developments in LMFBR structures design technology are described and the application of the technology to design of the CRBR reactor components is illustrated.
High-temperature operation up to 0 F requires that the designer consider the effects of thermal creep as a deformation mechanism and stress rupture as a failure mode. Structures designed to operate in this environment must be both light and stiff to minimize transient thermal stresses and prevent unacceptable flow-induced vibrations.
Thermal shields may be required to protect the load-bearing structure. At CRBR core-component goal fluence levels, the predicted magnitude of core-component dimensional changes due to irradiation swelling and creep is very large compared with the more familiar dimensional changes associated with thermal expansion and thermal creep. The design of the core components, and in particular the core restraint system, is dominated by the need to accommodate the effects of irradiation swelling, creep and du tility loss considerations.
Rhetorical structure theory and text analysis. Recent research on text generation has shown that there is a need for stronger linguistic theories that tell in detail how texts communicate. The prevailing theories are very difficult to compare, and it is also very difficult to see how they might be combined into stronger theories.
To make comparison and combination a bit more approachable, we have created a book which is designed to encourage comparison. A dozen different authors or teams, all experienced in discourse research, are given exactly the same text to analyze. The text is an appeal for money by a lobbying organization in Washington, DC. It informs, stimulates and manipulates the reader in a fascinating way. The joint analysis is far more insightful than any one team's analysis alone.
This paper is our contribution to the book. Rhetorical Structure Theory RST , the focus of this paper, is a way to account for the functional potential of text, its capacity to achieve the purposes of speakers and produce effects in hearers. It also shows a way to distinguish coherent texts from incoherent ones, and identifies consequences of text structure. The theory of gravitation in the spacetime with Finsler structure is constructed.
It is shown that the theory keeps general covariance. Such theory reduces to Einstein's general relativity when the Finsler structure is Riemannian. Therefore, this covariant theory of gravitation is an elegant realization of Einstein's thoughts on gravitation in the spacetime with Finsler structure. Development in structural systems reliability theory. This paper is concerned with two topics on structural systems reliability theory.
One covers automatic generation of failure mode equations, identifications of stochastically dominant failure modes, and reliability assessment of redundant structures. Reduced stiffness matrixes and equivalent nodal forces representing the failed elements are introduced for expressing the safety of the elements, using a matrix method.
Dominant failure modes are systematically selected by a branch-and-bound technique and heuristic operations. The other discusses the various optimum design problems based on reliability concept. Those problems are interpreted through a solution to a multi-objective optimization problem. Entropy for theories with indefinite causal structure. Any theory with definite causal structure has a defined past and future, be it defined by light cones or an absolute time scale.
Entropy is a concept that has traditionally been reliant on a definite notion of causality. However, without a definite notion of causality, the concept of entropy is not all lost. Indefinite causal structure results from combining probabilistic predictions and dynamical space-time.
The causaloid framework lays the mathematical groundwork to be able to treat indefinite causal structure. In this paper, we build on the causaloid mathematics and define a causally-unbiased entropy for an indefinite causal structure. In defining a causally-unbiased entropy, there comes about an emergent idea of causality in the form of a measure of causal connectedness, termed the Q factor. String field theory -inspired algebraic structures in gauge theories.
We consider gauge theories in a string field theory -inspired formalism. The constructed algebraic operations lead, in particular, to homotopy algebras of the related Batalin-Vilkovisky theories. We discuss an invariant description of the gauge fixing procedure and special algebraic features of gauge theories coupled to matter fields.

Projected quasiparticle theory for molecular electronic structure. Scuseria, Gustavo E. We derive and implement symmetry-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov HFB equations and apply them to the molecular electronic structure problem. All symmetries particle number, spin, spatial, and complex conjugation are deliberately broken and restored in a self-consistent variation-after-projection approach.
We show that the resulting method yields a comprehensive black-box treatment of static correlations with effective one-electron mean-field computational cost. The ensuing wave function is of multireference character and permeates the entire Hilbert space of the problem.
The energy expression is different from regular HFB theory but remains a functional of an independent quasiparticle density matrix. All reduced density matrices are expressible as an integration of transition density matrices over a gauge grid. We present several proof-of-principle examples demonstrating the compelling power of projected quasiparticle theory for quantum chemistry.
Invariant structures in gauge theories and confinement. The problem of finding all gauge invariants is considered in connection with the problem of confinement. Polylocal gauge tensors are introduced and studied.
It is shown both in physical and pure geometrical approaches that the path-ordered exponent is the only fundamental bilocal gauge tensor, which means that any irreducible polylocal gauge tensor is built of P-exponents and local tensors matter fields.
The simplest invariant structures in electrodynamics, chromodynamics and a theory with the gauge group SU 2 are considered separately. Parquet theory in nuclear structure calculations. The thesis concerns a numerical implementation of the Parquet summation of diagrams within Green's functions theory applied to calculations of nuclear systems.
The main motivation has been to investigate whether it is possible to develop this approach to a level comparable in accuracy and reliability to other ab initio nuclear structure methods. The Green's functions approach is theoretically well-established in many-body theory , but to our knowledge, no actual application to nuclear systems has been previously published.
It has a number of desirable properties, foremost the gently scaling with system size compared to direct diagonalization and the closeness to experimentally accessible quantities. The main drawback is the numerical instabilities due to the pole structure of the one-particle propagator, leading to convergence difficulties. This issue is one of the main focal points of the work presented in this thesis, and strategies to improve the convergence properties are described and investigated.
We have applied the method both to a simple model which can be solved by exact diagonalization and to the more realistic 4 He system. The results shows that our implementation is close to the exact solution in the simple model as long as the interaction strengths are small. As the number of particles increases, convergence is increasingly hard to obtain. In the 4 He case, we obtain results in the vicinity of the results from comparable approaches.
The numerical in-stabilities in the current implementation still prevents the desired accuracy and stability necessary to achieve the current benchmark standards. Electronic structure theory of the superheavy elements. Eliav, Ephraim, E-mail: ephraim tau. High-accuracy calculations of atomic properties of the superheavy elements SHE up to element are reviewed. The properties discussed include ionization potentials, electron affinities and excitation energies, which are associated with the spectroscopic and chemical behavior of these elements, and are therefore of considerable interest.
Accurate predictions of these quantities require high-order inclusion of relativity and electron correlation, as well as large, converged basis sets. Electron correlation is treated by either the multiconfiguration self-consistent-field approach or by Fock-space coupled cluster theory. The latter is enhanced by the intermediate Hamiltonian scheme, allowing the use of larger model P spaces.
The quality of the calculations is assessed by applying the same methods to lighter homologs of the SHEs and comparing with available experimental information. Very good agreement is obtained, within a few hundredths of an eV, and similar accuracy is expected for the SHEs.
Many of the properties predicted for the SHEs differ significantly from what may be expected by straightforward extrapolation of lighter homologs, demonstrating that the structure and chemistry of SHEs are strongly affected by relativity. The major scientific challenge of the calculations is to find the electronic structure and basic atomic properties of the SHE and assign its proper place in the periodic table. Significant recent developments include joint experimental—computational studies of the excitation spectrum of Fm and the ionization energy of Lr, with excellent agreement of experiment and theory , auguring well for the future of research in the field.
Synthesis meets theory : Past, present and future of rational chemistry. Chemical synthesis has its roots in the empirical approach of alchemy. Nonetheless, the birth of the scientific method, the technical and technological advances exploiting revolutionary discoveries in physics and the improved management and sharing of growing databases greatly contributed to the evolution of chemistry from an esoteric ground into a mature scientific discipline during these last years.
Furthermore, thanks to the evolution of computational resources, platforms and media in the last 40 years, theoretical chemistry has added to the puzzle the final missing tile in the process of "rationalizing" chemistry. The use of mathematical models of chemical properties, behaviors and reactivities is nowadays ubiquitous in literature.
Theoretical chemistry has been successful in the difficult task of complementing and explaining synthetic results and providing rigorous insights when these are otherwise unattainable by experiment. The first part of this review walks the reader through a concise historical overview on the evolution of the "model" in chemistry. Salient milestones have been highlighted and briefly discussed. The second part focuses more on the general description of recent state-of-the-art computational techniques currently used worldwide by chemists to produce synergistic models between theory and experiment.
Each section is complemented by key-examples taken from the literature that illustrate the application of the technique discussed therein. Scrape-off layer and divertor theory meeting : Proceedings. Neutron star structure : Theory , observation, and speculation. The broad physical aspects of the neutron-neutron interaction in dense matter are reviewed, and an examination is made of the extent to which the equation of state of neutron star matter is influenced by phase transitions which have been proposed for the high-density regime.
The dependence of the maximum neutron star mass and the stellar structure on the neutron-neutron interaction is studied through calculations of the equation of state of neutron matter based on four different models for this interaction: the Reid R and Bethe-Johnson BJ models, a tensor-interaction TI model which assumes that the attraction between nucleons comes from the higher order contribution of the pion-exchange tensor interaction, and a mean field MF model which assumes that all the attraction between nucleons is due to the exchange of an effective scalar meson.
These stars are used as a basis for comparing theory with observation for the mass and structure of neutron stars such as the Crab and Vela pulsars, and the compact X-ray sources Her X-1 and Vela X We find that both theory and observation tend to favor an equation of state that is stiff in the region of 10 14 15 g cm -3 and that a neutron star such as Her X-1 Mapprox. Based on starquake theory , it is concluded that the Crab pulsar could have a mass as large as 1.
The possibility of solid-core neutron stars and some of their observational consequences is discussed. Fermionic covariant prolongation structure theory for supernonlinear evolution equation. We investigate the superprincipal bundle and its associated superbundle. The super nonlinear connection on the superfiber bundle is constructed.

As an example, the supernonlinear Schroedinger equation is analyzed in the framework of this fermionic covariant prolongation structure theory. We obtain its Lax pairs and Baecklund transformation. Meeting the challenge of competition through structured entrepreneurship. The growth of the health care industry within the last several decades has changed the very nature of health care facilities.
Where once these facilities were only concerned with health-related issues, they are now concerned with their status as businesses. Marketing at Superior: Theory meets application in the field.
The field marketing practices of Superior Propane in rural Ontario are illustrated. In the Smithville area, Superior's customer base consists of agricultural, industrial, commercial, and residential customers, plus a large market for auto propane.
A 6, ft 2 showroom presents a representative selection of the wide range of appliances using propane. Superior's Smithville branch is one of the top five in Canada, in terms of volume. To expand business beyond its traditional branch structures , Superior has an Independent Partners Program which is aimed at all phases of business including independent sales agents, conversions, propane fuel stops, appliance installations, and building contractors.
A new 4, ft 2 showroom was recently constructed with separate display units for each appliance. The new building has brought increases in auto propane and appliance sales. The different branches of Superior Propane are able to tailor their marketing programs according to local needs by choosing the appropriate programs from those available at head office.
Root plasticity buffers competition among plants: theory meets experimental data. Morphological plasticity is a striking characteristic of plants in natural communities. In the context of foraging behavior particularly, root plasticity has been documented for numerous species. Root plasticity is known to mitigate competitive interactions by reducing the overlap of the individuals' rhizospheres.
But despite its obvious effect on resource acquisition, plasticity has been generally neglected in previous empirical and theoretical studies estimating interaction intensity among plants. In this study, we developed a semi-mechanistic model that addresses this shortcoming by introducing the idea of compensatory growth into the classical-zone-of influence ZOI and field-of-neighborhood FON approaches. The model parameters describing the belowground plastic sphere of influence PSI were parameterized using data from an accompanying field experiment.
Measurements of the uptake of a stable nutrient analogue at distinct distances to the neighboring plants showed that the study species responded plastically to belowground competition by avoiding overlap of individuals' rhizospheres. An unexpected finding was that the sphere of influence of the study species Bromus hordeaceus could be best described by a unimodal function of distance to the plant's center and not with a continuously decreasing function as commonly assumed.
We employed the parameterized model to investigate the interplay between plasticity and two other important factors determining the intensity of competitive interactions: overall plant density and the distribution of individuals in space. The simulation results confirm that the reduction of competition intensity due to morphological plasticity strongly depends on the spatial structure of the competitive environment. We advocate the use of semi-mechanistic simulations that explicitly consider morphological plasticity to improve our mechanistic understanding of plant interactions.
The theta- structure in string theories - 1: bosonic strings. We explored the theta- structures in bosonic string theories which are similar to those in gauge field theories. The theta- structure of string is due to the multiply connected spatial compact subspace of space-time. The work of this paper shows that there is an energy band E theta in the string theory and one may move the tachyon out in theory by choosing some proper theta parameters.
Quantum field theory approaches to meson structure. Meson spectroscopy became one of the most interesting topics in particle physics in the last ten years. In particular, the discovery of new unexpected states in the charmonium spectrum which cannot be simply explained by the constituent quark model attracted the interest of many theoretical efforts.
In the present thesis we discuss different meson structures ranging from light and heavy quark-antiquark states to bound states of hadrons-hadronic molecules. In the discussion of the meson properties like mass spectrum, total and partial decay widths and production rates we introduce three different theoretical methods for the treatment and description of hadronic structure. For the study of bound states of mesons we apply a coupled channel approach which allows for the dynamical generation of meson-meson resonances.
The decay properties of meson molecules are further on studied within a second model based on effective Lagrangians describing the interaction of the bound state and its constituents. Besides hadronic molecules the effective Lagrangian approach is also used to study the radiative and strong decay properties of ordinary quark-antiquark q anti q states. This holographic model provides a completely different ansatz and is based on extra dimensions and string theory.
Within this framework we calculate the mass spectrum of light and heavy mesons and their decay constants. Graph-based linear scaling electronic structure theory. Niklasson, Anders M. We show how graph theory can be combined with quantum theory to calculate the electronic structure of large complex systems. The graph formalism is general and applicable to a broad range of electronic structure methods and materials, including challenging systems such as biomolecules.
The methodology combines well-controlled accuracy, low computational cost, and natural low-communication parallelism. This combination addresses substantial shortcomings of linear scaling electronic structure theory , in particular with respect to quantum-based molecular dynamics simulations. Fundamental structures of M brane theory. String theorists believe that one way to achieve a fully quantized theory of string is through string field theory.
The other way is to study conformal field theory on Riemann surfaces of different genera, which is the subject of many of the talks at this Conference. In a way, string field theory is the more conservative approach, since it aims just to replace the spacetime points of conventional quantum field theory by string, which are extended objects.
However, from this point of view string theory has one rather unsatisfactory aspect, in the sense that although it has been very well developed and minutely studied, we are still rather unclear about its basic structure. We can contrast this to both general relativity, which is based on the geometry of spacetime, and to gauge theory , which is about the structure of various natural bundles over spacetime. And yet string theory is supposed to embody both these two essentially geometric theories.
To paraphrase Witten, in string theory we seem to have to work backwards to get at the still unknown basic structure. Some joint work with Chan Hong-Mo is reported in an attempt to gain some understanding in that general direction. It seems that one could in some sense consider string field theory as a generalized Yang-Mills theory.
This idea is explored. The structure of states and maps in quantum theory. Quantum state spaces and maps on them Integrable structure in discrete shell membrane theory.
We present natural discrete analogues of two integrable classes of shell membranes. By construction, these discrete shell membranes are in equilibrium with respect to suitably chosen internal stresses and external forces. The integrability of the underlying equilibrium equations is proved by relating the geometry of the discrete shell membranes to discrete O surface theory.
We establish connections with generalized barycentric coordinates and nine-point centres and identify a discrete version of the classical Gauss equation of surface theory.
