With respect to MDs having the power and not the recruiters, I experienced the opposite a few months back. Gaining boldness from many articles on this blog, I applied for a position with a middle market firm. I did have an interesting internship that was related if only tangentially and I was able to present a compelling and true! I became a sleuth, got the e-mail address of the MD to whom the person recruited for this position would report, and sent him my cover letter and resume.

He must have seen something he thought was noteworthy, because he passed it on to HR…but without getting back to me himself. Still, I at least got a first round interview phone, as I was out of state The HR recruiter seemed a bit miffed, though, like I had gone around her. She asked me how I knew that MD and said that she would be handling the recruitment process. It was clear that she would never have picked my resume out of the pile and was only talking to me because the MD forwarded my resume to her.

That experience did show me that networking works and what I did was not even networking, more like a cold call. There are a lot of reasons that a recruiter would throw out a resume that the actual MD would consider. And in order to move forward in the process, you have to be what they think is right for the position.

I would think, then, that it probably would be helpful to network with an HR contact if the opportunity arises to make the connection. It is helpful to network w an HR contact given the opportunity, though I would spend most of my time networking with people who are in the industry, know the industry and have the power to hire. In my experience, its usually easy to impress recruiters because the questions they ask are generally similar. Networking with recruiters, in my limited experience, was useful to a certain extent.

What really helped was my relationship with people who had the power to hire. I have a phone call tomorrow with a banker I met at a networking event.
